Roll & Pleat 52 Ford Headliner/Panels

I am going to attempt to sew and install my first roll & pleat headliner and door/quarter panels in a '52 Ford Clb Cpe. Anyone that has photos and instructions and would be willing to assist me with same would be greatly appreciated. Should the stripes in the headliner go lengthwise or crosswise? I plan to put a single color wide strip at the windshield and rear glass to make it easier to stretch and install. Again, photos, instructions or help of any kind will be most greatly appreciated (and Needed!!!). Thanks

I would love to help you, but I'm not sure what you want to do. Do you want to install a "hard" headliner or use the bows that came in the car? I think that's the reason you haven't gotten any replies up until now. I'm perplexed, (and I think everyone else is too.) Please explain better what you want to do. The problem is "tuck and roll" , or "roll and pleat" means different things to different people. ???

Interior Headliner

I plan to use the original bows that came with the car. Roll & Pleat is the term I grew up with. It means cutting the vinyl into 1 &1/2 inch strips-plus1/2 inch on each side for the seam (alternating white and purple stripes) and sewing them together with listing cloth sewn in where the bows cross the top of the car. I would prefer for the stripes to go from side to side, but have heard that it can be impractical. I also plan to use a wider strip of vinyl, front and rear, to finish extending the headliner to where it is glued to the metal of the car and down the rear quarter in front of the rear glass. I am also unsure how to fasten the windlace around the door - is it tucked in up over the door the same place the headliner is pushed in, or somplace else? I'm also not sure where it goes on the rear of the kick panels. As I said, I apologize for my stupidity, but I've never done a headliner before. All help will be appreciated beyond imagination! See 52HEMI Journal for Photos.

That's what I thought you wanted to do, I just wasn't sure. You need to get the windlace installed around the doors first, which will require you to loosen the headliner in that area. Ideally, you should take out the old headliner. Do you have the old headliner? If not, buy an inexpensive headliner from someone like Kanter, ( www.kanter.com ) take it apart and use the pieces for a pattern. The windlace is tacked or stapled to fiber strips that surround the perimeter of the doors. Those metal pieces with the teeth facing the outside of the car around the top part of the door should unscrew, and there will be tacking strip underneath. The tacking strip is held in place by metal "V" shaped teeth. If some of the tacking strip is missing, it needs to be replaced. You can replace missing sections with strips of black waterboard glued together to make the width and thickness you need. After the windlace is installed, put the metal strips back in and the headliner gets tucked up underneath in that area. Do the headliner the way you want to do it, with the pleats running side to side. Matching the pleats front to back could be a real headache. Check out the knowledge base for more detailed instructions in hanging the new headliner.
