Rolling Blackout 2003

I got out of work at 3:40 and by the time I got home at 4:25 every thing was dead. Called my wife in Akron and she and her mom were going to the hospital for super, sounded like a plan so I went there too. How did you guys survive??

My Dad and sister live outside Utica, NY and he never lost power. 3/4 of the city did but him and sis made out great. Brother and family live in Bethpage down on Long Island and I know they lost power but are making it through just fine.

generators rule!

we lost power pretty early on (Rochester, NY), and after fiddling with the generator for a little while (supposed to be autostart; wasn't)... got that running, so had fridge and water (we're on out own wells), visited my grandfather - 86 and lives alone - he was fine, so i had dinner in the center of town (they still had power) and then went back home and ran an extension cord from the house to the shop so I could do some work by trouble light (it's a pain in the ***** to try to work, find tools, and keep from tripping over the extension cord in a crowded shop, but i managed not to kill myself). that's about it; mudslides sound great, SS. ... and how was dinner at the hospital, TM454?

Man we just got our power back on after 26 hours! I was just winding down work on the jobsite when the power went down. After getting back into town, I managed to buy ice and seeing as the beer store closed down, I managed to get to the local brewery and buy some at the retail outlet. Talk about priorities.
The power up here was restored in tiny little areas at a time so, some line ups at the beer stores today were 45 min long. All gas stations that opened up were jammed completely and many ran out. We put the food on ice , BBQ'd all the meat and spent some quality time with the kids. Maybe it wasn't so bad. My kids have never seen the stars or milky way so bright. (no light pollution) We're supposed to have more blackouts, so we stocked up.

I'm in Central Jersey and had NO problems ... my mom lives 5 miles away and had a bunch of 1-2 minute blackouts ... but 15 miles North of me an onward (my sister and a nephew) were blacked out all day and night.

I think it was terrorists and they're covering it up to avoid panic.

I was on here when power went out.The neighbor was mowing his lawn next door and I thought he hit the service entrance or something.LOL
Notice it went out right at the time of day when everyone on the east coast gets home from work and turns on the a/c.I think we just blew a fuse.Of course why would they need a/c in toronto don't they have igloos and polar bears up there??

Thank FDR for good old TVA. Took us good Old Southern Boys a long time to "discover" 'lectricity" so our distribution systems are much more modern than the old Edison systems. And NAFTA has taken what little industry that really sucked the KWs so there is not a big power drain when it gets warm!!

It seems like cold beer was a priority for some. Good idea, actually, here's some proof from some very wise men:
"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel shamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I
say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."
Jack Handy

"When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep When we fall asleep, we commit no sin. When we commit no sin, we go to heaven. Sooooo, let's all get drunk and go to heaven!"

And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers. One afternoon atCheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo
Theory to his buddy Norm. Here's how it went:
"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only
move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know,
kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

It's true, we don't need electric power for A/C, fridges, lights, etc, but . . . . . . Dam! Those polar bears get nasty when they lose their satellite TV and internet!
