Post Rough running 350

The engine is brand new. It has been sitting for probably a year. It has a Holley single pump, probably 600. I put in a new (except for the module)HEI distributer. I got it started but, while it idles okay, it doesn't drive well at all. I replaceed the power valve thinking that that was maybe the cause. It didn't fix anything and it backfires out of the carb and hesitates like crazy, if I tap the gas it almost dies. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
PS Im not sure the distributer is in the right tooth but it runs, kinda, so...

There could be lot of things but since you just put in the distributor I would check it first. Make sure you have the firing order correct. Check to see if you are hitting TDC with #1 plug. Rotate the dist. to see if you can get it running smoother. If you have to turn it a lot it is probably off. I have a Corvair that when I got it the wires were off one position and I could get it to run by turn the dist. enough to get the timing close.

If that doesn't work go back and check some of the other posts on rough idle and follow the instructions on timing and vacuum leaks.

One more thing. You say the engine is new. Did you break it in correctly? Run it at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes. Are the valve adjusted correctly?

I'd say the firing order is off.Or the dist is off a tooth.
As far as cam breakin at 2000rpm I've never done it that way and I've never had a problem. My personall belief is that if you wack a lobe off its a mechanical interferance or a crap cam(competition). You did put cam lube though, right??And didn't beat it befor 3000k???

Unhappy

i hate to say this but you no doubt blew out the new power valve you just put in. get and install an anti blow out valve next time you replace it (soon). 20 minutes at 2200 rpm is pretty much std proceedure for new cam break in but now that's after the fact. i would say from what you posted you might well have the dist. a tooth off. unless you're certain i'd say pull it out and start from scratch.
