Rpm
ok when you are going to pick out a cam and it says 2000-5000 does that mean you have no power till 2000

68impala is right. you will have some power under 2000 but not much. the power really starts at 2000. this is really as far i would go for the street. but it all depends what you can put up with.

68 said it right. The part about "no power" doesn't mean that the car isn't going to move, it's just not going to pull hard until it gets there. That's why you get a matching torque converter that lets the motor spin up to a certain rpm before it starts to apply the power to the tranny. It's like letting the clutch slip to keep the rpms up. Just make sure you get a cam that matches the rest of your motor. The key to building a nice motor is to have all the parts work correctly with each other...

so what would you go with? i am thinking the comp 270m but i dont know what stall. what intake will work good. i want the truck to fly. sorry about all the cam quastions but there are so many it is hard to pick the right one.. i will be running strait pipe so i think any cam i use you will here that lopey idle i think. but i want the power to go with it
this is not going to be driven every day. a few times a week at that. i want it to good on the street and the strip, i will be takeing it there alot. |

Let us know what you have right now and we'll go from there.

Power that starts around 2000 RPM is a pretty good thing, especially for the street. You will be running this most of the time on the street. Not the track, though. You will like higher-end power. But look for something that plateaus (sp?), so you can keep the power for a good range.

you will need a 2500- 2800 stall with that combo.

Ok, that's a good start. Do you know anything else about the internals of the motor? Like pistons (dome/flat), rods, heads, cam, intake, carb? Is it even running right now? Also, how do you want the motor to perform? Do you want a low end torquer , or a high end screamer? Also, is it daily driven or a weekend warrior?

sorry, this is off the subject, but i was curious about the weight of your truck. is it completly striped with an all fiberglass body or something? i was just curious as to how u got that thing to lose 2000lbs.

I think the weight and the gear ratio may be a lil wrong, I think he wants a tire burner for friday night, prob a good set of 202 heads, a edelbrock performer, or maybe the edelbrock performer setup with cam and all.

it is 2700 pounds the engine is striped down and has been bored 60 over. it has flat top pistons.it had 76cc heads but i think i am going to get new ones. i realy dont know the size of the gears out back. this is going to be a weekend cruser.i kinda want some lowend power but alot of high end power. something that i can smoke the tiers (not alot) and still put up a good race
its 3,775 pounds sorry about that. |

vortec heads will raise your comp. and outflow the stockers. A cam similar to the crane powermax with .440lift I and .454lift E should be acceptable. Add an edelbrock air-gap dualplane intake and a Edel. thunder series 650cfm carb. A converter rated around 2700-3000. And you will need to think about better gearing (3.42--3.73)
