Rubber burning smell

My mom's car has a rubber burning smell coming from rear right wheel. I lifted it up and inspected it and wheel moves freely. I took brakes apart, greased up sliding pins, back of brake pads, sliders, etc
What could be problem?

If the brake shoes aren't hanging up, is she a 'brakelight driver', keeping a foot hovering and ultimately resting on the brake pedal? I see it all the time. Just a thought.

But it's just that one wheel. I might try caliper rebuild if this doesn't fix issue.

did a rubber exhaust hanger break, and is now laying on the exhaust?
or exhaust now touching the spare tire?

No kinks in that wheels brake line, holding pressure for a while? Any fresh rub marks on the inside of the tire?

Could it be bad wheel bearing?

I wouldn't think wheel bearing with a rubber smell. The only rubber there might be the seal, depending on the vehicle, it only rides lightly on the axle shaft if anywhere.

I guess if it was a sealed bearing pack, ala 9" Ford housing ends, it may have some rubber sealer or "O" ring, but you'd hear it and have leaks if it was that bad.

What kind of vehicle?

Hot brakes have a very unique smell and it is not anything like burning rubber. I would look else where, as someone else mentioned maybe something on the exhaust. Also look for shinny spots, maybe you have a tire rub on a body part or something else

That's what I thought. However after taking it for a test drive I did smell faint smell of burning rubber from that wheel well. Brake pads are Hawk HPS and never had problem since I've installed them on the car last year.

If it has a caliper hanging up i have seen and smelled the rubber burning before from it , The caliper will hang and get hot and start to burn out the rubber in the caliper around the piston. JMO
Exspecially if your mom has been riding the brakes and or has had to slam the brakes on can cause the brakes to hang and get hot also. Again JMO.
