running round track in first gear th350

Hey everyone, i had a question about a th350. I'm running on a paved circle track, 350 auto with 2.73 and was wondering about saving some wasted horses. I've done alot of looking around but couldnt really find what i was looking for. wondering though about what to eliminate/modify with 2nd and 3rd gear to rack up a few more rpms. I've done just about everything to a chevy, except rebuilding a trans., but i'm ready and sure i could, just need a good book and some communication!!! I sure appreciate any input rodders! Thanks

An option instead of a TH350 is a 2 speed manual or a Powerglide. The PG can be made to run w/o a torque converter and can out perform a TH350. Are they outlawed?

Run as small of a damper on the front of the crank as possible. TCI has a "Claimer" damper that's like 5-1/2 lbs x 6" OD.

round track th350

thanks for the reply cobalt. unfortunately, we cant run powerglides or direct drives. my class is "stockm,as manufactured" , till they catch us anyway. it's also a tight budget, the smallest balancer i'd be able to come up with would be 305 factory or old model 283/327 for short water pump, but i dont have racing pulleys either. thanks for all input!

A little known 'trick': If you can locate a 200 or 229 Chevy V6 crank and water pump (long style) pulley set, they will turn slower than than the standard 305/350 pulleys.

There were several different diameters of alternator pulleys available through the years, but I imagine you're using a total loss system running off just the battery w/the alternator disabled. If they check to see that the alt. is putting out, be sure to fully charge the battery before each heat and jump start the fresh battery, so the alt. won't be working so hard (if at all) during the race.

thanks for the tech. what models have that v6? i'll sure search the junkyard. i was sure hoping to get some info on the trans though. i've read about leaving or doing something with the second and third gear drums, or clutch plate baskets whatever, and plugging an oil hole passage, something along those lines. beats me. i found an hp th350 rebuild manual, supposed to be pretty good. i'm dead set on rebuilding my own one of these days.

The 200 was used 1978-79, mainly used in the G-cars (Monte Carlo, Malibu, El Camino).

The 229 was used 1978-'84. They were used in in A, F, and G-bodies.

The best pulley sets will be on AC delete vehicles.

Heard that- I can rebuild one, but the mods you want to do are beyond my "expertise" .
