running too rich?

i have a sbc with everything new and cannot get it to smooth out. it runs too rich i cant do anything with timing, i set it at 36 degrees total. the carb is from another vehicle that ran perfect so i know it isnt the problem and the valves are properly adjusted.the fuel pumps i have went thru one just mysteriously quit, the other had way beyond 15psi and now the 3rd i checked had 8psi off the motor on the bench. i am using an ARP lightweight fuel pump pushrod, is it possible they could have sent me one for a bigblock instead? or is there any difference? or would they even interchange?

check that fuel pressure minimum is 4-5 psi, want 6-6.5 psi high pressure will not allow the fuel float to cut off the fuel after the bowl is full, forcing fuel into the venturi and flooding or running rich.

i still have gas in the oil so i still must have a vacuum leak. i changed the intake gasket once already trying to fix that using fel pro #1255 intake gasket, at the same time i had a 15psi fuel pump, the one now has 7.5 psi. are the vortecs notorious for leaking around the intake? there is one more gasket i can try, Fel Pro MS98000T. i was using a lifter valley baffle from moroso. could that be keeping it from sealing?.

Pick up a replacement OEM pump for less than 10 bucks & see if you can get your pressure issue undercontrol.

The pump that quit, did the diaphragm rupture & spill gas into the oil?

Push rod should make no difference as far as richness goes, the stroke is dependent on the pump cam.

Are you using the right bolts to hold down the intake manifold, and torquing them properly? The felpro 1255's are pretty good for vortec heads as thick as they are.

Did you seal them with anything?

What about your timing, what is it set at idle (initial advance)?

Are you using a spring kit with light springs?

You have a monster cam in it?

Obama would recommend check your tire pressure, done that yet?

1. the 1st pump was an edelbrock performer the 2nd and 3rd were oem.
2. no
4.im using the arp bolts for the vortec intake, and going thru the proper torque sequence.
5. i sealed around the water ports with permatex gasket sealant(black).
6. i couldnt get it to idle, i had to set it total 36degrees at 3,000 rpm.
8. the cam is an extreme energy 262.
