Rust encapsulator???

Hey rodders, its been a while since I posted so here goes another question. Is there a plus side to using a rust encapsulator such as naval jelly and if so why wash it off with water after it turns black, doesn't that defeat the purpose???

Naval jelly is a phosphoric acid based rust remover and not an "encapsulator" like POR 15 or Eastwood's Encapsulator crap. Naval jelly when properly used will remove rust while the so called encapsulators just cover it up and claim to stop it but it is still there.

When used properly, naval jelly does a pretty good job of removing rust on chrome wheels. I don't know about other stuff. I think it will ruin paint though.

As far as eastwoods rust encapsulator.....I don't know if it works or not. The P.O. cleaned my frame really well and coated it with that. Again...I don't know how long ago, but so far no rust has come back.

I would assume he sand blasted the frame from looking at it (just a guess). I know he sand blasted some of the other parts before he painted them.

Those rust encapsulators and such..If one reads the instructions it will tell one to remove any residue before painting..the rust hardeners and such use a carrier fluid and that needs to be removed as it will interfere with paint adhesion..

This applies to any of the naval jelly..rust mort..picklex or any of those products of that nature..So apply it let it work and then wash off the residue and sand it out before applying any paint..That is if you use it at all..
