rust-oleum overspray
 

I got a problem. Couple years ago I bought a little convertable that had at the time fresh black paint. The body and paint were not perfect, but I didn't pay a "perfect" price either. This year I had to paint a few items with white rust-oleum. ( not car stuff) So I went outside, on the side of the garage and sprayed my stuff. Couple days later I go to wash the convert. and I find that somehow I got a fine mist over the car.(Harley also). I tried cleaner wax, and real fine rubbing compound, but it didn't cut the overspray. What do I do now? I have no idea if the paint is bc/cc or single stage. I suspect it is single stage because of the quality of the body work, but that is just a UNEDUCATED opinion. Repaint at this point is not a option. Anybody got some ideas?

Try mineral spirits, the auto grade not wal-mart type, but try it on a hidden spot first since you don't know what kind of paint you have. It should not hurt a thing unless the paint is a cheap enamel type but test first to be sure, it should remove the Rustolum with little effort.

Whether the paint is BC/CC or not is simple - take a white rag and rub on it with some compound by hand - no color on the rag = clearcoat.

You might try something like "Goof-off" on a small area and see if it works

OR some Heavy Duty rubbing compound. It's more aggressive so you'd need to polish it out again but should cut into the overspray better.

Those blue clay bars and some water will take it off. What are those clay bars called? Dangit! :(

Thanks guys, those all sound like some good ideas. I"ll give them a try in a day or two. Should have some time the Friday after Thanksgiving. By the way, I hope you all have a good Thanksgiving with your families.

If it was mine I'd just wetsand the overspray off with 2K grit finishing paper, and plenty of slightly soapy water to keep the paper clean. I'd use a small foam block so as not to sand ridges down into the paint, and sand with light pressure just until the overspray was gone, Then I'd cut and buff it all back out for a better shine than before the "Oopsie"...

This is Rustolum overspray we are talking about here not auto paint, the mineral spirits will take that stuff off as easy as washing the car.

NORM: You might try giving RUSTOLEUM a call. They have a Tech Line and I have talked to them before. Their formula is quite simple most of their hipe is marketing. Let us know how it turns out... You never know what five grandsons might DO in out garage.... THANKS.... THERESA

I have sprayed a GREAT many gallons of Rustolum(machinery repair/rebuilding) and I have had to deal with overspray on everything from cars to house siding. I don't even consider the stuff paint as it is an industrial "coating" and even the term "industrial" is used loosely IMO. This stuff is junk and no exotic measures are called for to remove overspray, certainly not sanding it off :nono:

I still haven't had time to "play" with the paint yet. Should have time on Friday. I'll try mineral spirits first since I have that in stock. I'll try it on the lower pan first to make sure it does the paint no harm. I just wanted to write a quick note so you guys don't think I'm ignoring you. Thanks again.
