Back to the OP question, replacing the whole top (if you can find one that is in good shape), would be the way to go if you have the knowledge of how to do it. Apparently we all have differing opinions on how it should be done, but it is your car so do whatever you feel safe with your family riding in. If you can't find a replacement top, then all of the pieces are available to repair yours, it would just result in a little more work on your part to change the braces if needed and the top skin. You need to look at more frame manufacturer... They don't all do it like you said...
And yes.. I have confidence in my abilities. I been doing this long enough to know what work's and what doesn't..
