rusty frame?

hi there---great site, i wonder if anyone could give me some advise on repairing a frame on my 88 nissan 4x4,the inside part of the box frame is cracked and badly rusted for about a foot around the shock support and leaf brackets. the outside and the rest of the frame is pretty good. the truck itself is a great runner but i don't know if i can repair it myself, i do have some welding experience, any pro advice would be great. thanx rupert p.s. i have to drive 30 miles on rough dirt roads to go to town and back hence the 4x4 is pretty handy//

Hmm . . . If you were doing a major restoration I would suggest buying a solid used frame. Those trucks are plentiful @ the junk yards. However it sounds like you want to patch and repair and just keep it on the road. In the latter case, you are pretty much restricted to just what you described in your post - search for, cut out and replace the rotten plates. "Some" welding experience is relative - can mean you can strike an arc 3 out of 4 times w/o killing yourself all the way up to being able to run a bead that would pass a certification test. If you are not pretty far up the scale to the certified weld, I would recommend you take the truck to a good welder and ask him to do the minimum ($$$) to get the truck safe again. If you want a show stopper, go for the replacement frame.
