The S-10 makes a road trip......
Hello All,
Well, it is time for a beer and a smoke. The S-10 just made its maiden voyage out onto public highways. It is not registered or inspected yet, so I had to keep it short. Went like this. First trip was very slow and had some backfiring problems I have not been able to sort out at low rpm so it sounded kindof bad, but had no problems. Coming in the drive the nieghbor says she thinks the front wheel is wobbling a bit......hmmmm should have tighten that bugger. After that dumb move, it got better. Second trip was a little more spirited. About 50 mph but still no more than about 10% throttle. Remember I am tuning a new Megasquirt AVR. Seems good with not real shaking and the backfiring has gone away at higher load and RPM.....think I have some EGO controller issues. Third trip I give it about 15% throttle. Things start coming alive. It started making boost at about 2500-3000 and got to 5psi very quick. Started to detonate so I let off. Looks like boost is going to happen very well once tuned. It felt pretty good when it started to rpm a little and make boost. I think 1/2 to full throttle is going to be fun........ Later, Chris |

sounds like its gonna be a BEAST if its already coming alive with only part throttle makes me want to bolt that 65mm turbo onto my 455 poncho and go destroy some tires ... or at least go drag some hondas around by their park bench wings have fun man ... and keep us updated ... we want pics of the first hard launch ! |

It was definately a great feeling getting to finally take it for a spin. There are still a few things to work out and I am going to have to get my brother to run the laptop and tune while I drive. I think I should be able to work out tuning in a couple of good hours and a couple of tanks of fuel. I will try to get some video of the truck sometime in the near future. I have my trailer and will be going to the track after I get the engine tuned pretty close. With all this smoke you guys want I think we are going to have to start a charity tire fund ![]() Later, Chris |

Hats off to you, Chris. To get to the first drive stage with your massive undertaking is awesome to an old school guy that is trying to make it into the 21 century. When you are in a build your own project, you talk in the mirror when you need Tech Support!!! Hope the bugs will work out one by one. I have just enough knowledge to know that just the EFI part of your project is a delicate balance of injector size, fuel pressure, timing, air/fuel ratio, exhaust gas ratio, inlet air temp, engine temp, and throttle position and you are going to scramble all this balance with a Turbo!! To quote others: "You da Man!!!"

Hopefully I can figure it all out before I loose all my hair ![]() I do actually have some tech support. I talk to the firmware developers on a daily basis. Those guys are like Neo on the matrix so I can describe a problem and they know exactly where to go to fix it. To them I am slow as a turtle on learning just to put things into perspective. So far it is really fun to do this efi tuning. I can not tell you how cool it is to tune an engine from the driver seat while the engine is running and going down the road. Later, Chris |
