Post S-10 rear end

Charles, thanks for the great info. Sounds like a 342 gear would fit me perfectly. Since I am running the same tires, the rpm's sound good to me. I am not very familiar with rearends, so could you tell me, do I need to change the entire rear end or just the gears or third member? How do I tell which rearend had which gear ratio? Is counting the revolutions very accurate? Would you have any idea what automobile would have the rearends that I could use? I know that I am asking a lot of questions, but I appreciate any help you could give me.

Gator

if your referring to the 7.5 rear commonly in S-10`s, you can get a posi unit from a firebird t/a or camaro Z28 from 82 to 87. I did this with my cutlass, I just swapped the guts. if this interests you, I have the codes of the F-body rear`s to look for, just let me know. another way to tell the ratio with the rear cover off, all GM ring gears have the numbers stamped on them, a example would be 41 11 divide these and you get 3.73.

a friend of mine has a s-10 with a 400sbc in it and he said he couldn't find any posi that would just fit into the rearend housing. i don't know if he is right after reading this but u say a posi out of a 82-87 camaro or firebird will work. so have u tried this or just saying it will work.

what year S-10? the 88 and up F-bodies came with a rear from Aussie, and I think the S-10 did the same, is why I said 82-87, if a S-10 pickup has a GM american 7.5 inch rear, the diff will swap in.

SLP sells off Zexel diffs for $100. A lot of S-10 guys drop them in. If I remember correctly, you need 28 spline axles and 3.23 or taller gears. It only fits the 7.5" and 7.625" rearends, not the 8.5".

Doublevision is correct about this swap. The American made S-10 rears and mid 80's camaro and firebirds are interchangeable
