s-10 rear noise

Just had a pinion seal put in the 2003 S-10 rear. Could not do it, working 60+ hours a week. Now it has a whine when backing off power at 35 - 45 mph. I am wondering if the universals were installed wrong. Noise was not evident before repair. Where should I look? Whine cannot be heard below 30 and above 50.
Thanks,
Jay

i have done MANY(100's ?) of those seal replacements. those rears are known to make noise. so it could be that the bearings were on their way out. though more likely, it sounds like the pinion nut was not replaced correctly = too tight or too loose. check the gear oil level, perhaps the guy forgot to fill it back up.

Did you or whomever done it fill it back up with grease after putting the pinion seal in?? You may want to jack it up and check the pinion nut as well to make sure it did NOT back off..

pinion

I checked the pinion nut and fluid. All seem OK. Could the bolt be torqued too tight and cause this whine. Could the universal be too tight too and cause this whine. It has not gotten any worse. It does not seem to have the sound of a bearing and is really only heard between 30 and 50. Is there anything else putting in a seal could have unset when being reassembled. Knew I should have taken off work and done it myself.
