s10 1995 2.2 2wd shift problems
 
My 1995 S10 2.2 2wd does not downshift, and only gets into 2nd if I ease off the gas. Anyone know what would repair it?

mileage on this unit?

Recent repair or service work?

Check engine light on ?

the trans does not down shift? Yet you say it only makes it to 2nd gear if easy on the throttle?

I am confused. Please explain further?

No upshifts? Only 2nd gear?

Does reverse function good?

It has 142k miles, and i recently serviced the transmission filter, and there's no engine light. For the transmission to upshift from 1st to 2nd, I have to wait the speed to reach around 18 mph and take the foot off the throttle pedal. after that it shifts fine, 3rd, 4th. The downshift isn't happening in any gear. Reverse is working just fine. Thanks for answering.

At 142k miles on the original trans...... it is way past it's service life expectancy .

The band for 2nd & 4th gear is the same band. The band may be worn and not holding power in 2nd gear. Usually 4th gear is weak too. The servo for 2nd / 4th gear band usually does not fail if it has worked correctly for many miles.

You could have a worn out accumulator for 2nd gear. These accumulator pistons can break or wear out the bores and then leak. This will weaken 2nd gear holding power too.

IF you drop the pan , the 2nd gear accumulator is held on the trans case with 3 bolts... 2 short , one long.

The truck was donated to me. The previous owner apparently had the transmission serviced alright.

The 3rd, 4th and gears have no problems at all, I can't even notice shifting, so smooth it shifts. The engine runs strong for the l4 and gas mileage is at least 20 mpg.
My guesses were the throttle position sensor low voltage, the 1-2 solenoid, or the vaccum modulator. A couple friends suggested the kickback cable, but I do not think that vehicle has one, but a solenoid.
The accumulator is a better suggestion, thanks. I'll service it tomorrow and come by.

Interesting.

A low voltage TPS would set a code. You could scan scan for codes or a history in the computer. You need a real scanner , not cheap code reader.

The cable the friends speak of is a TV cable. Your trans is a 4L60E.

There is no vacuum modulator on this trans... never was one on the 700r4 style of trans.

A pair of shift solenoids are easy to swap out.

I know this won't help your problem but I have a 1994 GMC Sonoma with a 4.3 and 4L60E and get 21 to 22 MPG regularly. I would think your I4 should do better.Good luck with your tranny.

Thanks Crosley. Possibly, the codes were taken and cleared yesterday, but not shared with me.

speedydeedy, It does do better. 20+ is in our heavy traffic.
