Nothing wrong with overkill, the difference in power and weight won't be noticed unless your racing, even then it shouldn't be much of a problem. I wouldn't guess fuel milliage is much concern if the guy is swapping a v8 in. A NP231 would be a decent choice as long as it isn't a slip yoke unit. I'm pretty sure the divorced toyota case you speak of is found in older land cruisers..
