Question S10/Jimmy Engine Removal

Can someone help me figure out how to remove the bellhousing to engine block bolts on a 1995 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3L V6, automatic transmission, and four wheel drive. Engine needs replacing(oil cooler line blew and the engine didn't like running dry). We got to five of the six bolts after much blood, sweat, and tears. We haven't even been able to get a wrench on the 6th bolt. The exhaust pipe (y-section)is in the way, but is rusted into place and we haven't been able to remove it. Are there special wrenches? Should the engine/transmission come out as a unit? Should we cut off the exhaust pipe at the catalytic converter? Any help would be great.
