S10 t-5 scarce?

I feel like the s10 t-5 with mechanical speedo is getting scarce. I can't find any pre-87 . All i see are the newer t-5's from 94's and newer. ANyways i need one and want to know how much work is needed to configure a newer one with electrcric speedo with an old sbc

dont use the s10 t5

its not a WORLD class tranny, you need to find a t5 from behind a V8 or have the s10 t5 worked on to put all the world class parts.

anyhow....I know they make a kit to convert the mechanical drive to electric, but I do not think that there is a kit out there to go backwards.

I thought the pre 1987 s10 t-5 trannys were NWC and thats what hotrodders want because the mechanical speedometer is easy to work with. Your saying that i need the WC tranny which I'll find from a t5 from behind a V8 or have the s10 t5 worked on to put all the world class parts. Maybe i'm wrong.

Are those kits expensive?? And complicated to convert

I only know of one man who would be willing to do it and hes keeps a WC t5 setting on the shop floor because of the loads of people who want them, He sells it to them on the bases that they trade theirs in on it.

As I understand NONE of the S10 t5s are WC, for the simple reason that they were not needed because of the HP rating.

You are correct a NWC has the mechanical tach. I believe TCI guages may have a converter you are looking for.

As for the t5 out of an s-10 it would not be concerned with this unless you plan on putting a lot of H.P in your v8

Absolutely true..In the 4wd world they are swapped out for a t350 with a transfer case from a full size truck as the transfer case and manual trans from and s-10 just is not strong enough fro that app..

Thank you Sam. If you want to put this trans behind a V8 (of any size) AND sleep at night take it to a reputable trans shop and tell them to put world class parts in it.

OR Get a T5 from behind a V8 pickup....but be warned the trans from pickups have a much wider gear set in them.

the s10 transfer case is strong enough to use with the trans adapter. the fullsize has the driveshaft on the passenger side.
