S10...V8 Conversion... Distributors??
 
Ok, I need to know where I can get the HEI distributor for the conversion.

Book says the GM HEI v8 distributor will hook right up. (the HEI distributor's I have dont hook up.)


Just thought Id would see where you guys got yours. (Id rather not spend $200 on one right now)

just get an early vac advance HEI from the bone yard or get a rebuilt at the auto parts store.

Well,the wires won't plug right in...you'll have to adapt the wires in your wiring harness to plug into the HEI.

I personally used a Mallory unilite distributor, because on my truck a regular HEI distributor would not clear the firewall, without modifying the firewall. I know some people say they'lle work but in my own experience they just don't fit. This could vary from other years my truck is a '82. I also did some frame mods so the engine would sit lower, maybe this had something to do with it. The mallory outfit works great the 350 has been in my truck since 1985. I didn't do the original conversion but I have had the motor out numerous times (stupid tranny) and did the mods to lower the motor.

Yea those early vac advance ones are pretty big.

I have an 85 im doing the swap on.

My truck is a '82 and I have a HEI. The cap is about 1/2" from the firewall and there is enough room to take the cap off if I want to.<a href="http://www.bobnewhart.com/orangekitty/v8chevys10/CNXT0066.JPG" target="_blank">Here is a pic.</a>

It must be because of lowering my engine then, I've been told by others taht HEI should fit. Can't figure out my Digital camera or I'd show a pic.

I just need to find one that hooks up cuz the two HEI's I have wouldnt hook up....

Unless I am just retarded and missed a wire?

The best HEI to use is the 74-early 80s one with the vacuum advance and the 4 prong module.

An HEI only needs the battery wire to work (it goes to the Batt terminal on the dist cap and its only hot when the key is turned on)

Why did you lower the engine bonuts? My oil pan is about 1/4" off of the crossmember and I thought that was low.

Because we had too much time on our hands, and a fabricator who wanted to help out. It looks factory, the lowering job and the 350 looks like it was there out of the factory. A new cross-member was fabbed to let the engine drop down a total of about 2-2 1/2inches. This also made some other problems with clearance and the fuel pump among others. The frame had to be notched out to allow me to HAVE a fuel pump. I would never have done this, mainly because it was simply too much work for what it accomplished, but we had the welder guy and hes got skills so we did it. It may corner better, but really how good can a truck handle? I know not all that good but this one seems to do well. I'll try to get pics of the conversion but my camera has been giving me troubles lately. Been trying to get a pic of my bike for the guys for some time now.

If you think thats bad...I know a guy that grafted a '80s Cutlass clip on his 4x4 S10 to make it 2wd.Atleast he ended up with the V8 motor mounts though.
