safe circuit testing methods??

I just took the center console out of the vette to get ready to paint it.there are few bulbs in there still working, so I want to test everything and get it all working before i re-install.
my question is, can i hook the battery up and turn the key forward without damaging the electronic ignition? (engine not fired since rebuild).should i unplug the distributor cap to be sure?
would it be a good idea to run a fuse (15 amp. )in the line to the positive cable?just to be sure there is no dead shortsor the like. thanks for the help, mike

I think you are right on track with your ideas. Probably dont need to disconnect the distributor though.

I used to have a diagnostic chart that claimed the was no such thing as electricity and all things really ran on smoke. Wish I still had that.
So dont let the smoke out of the wires and everything will be ok.

why not replace all the lamps with new ones while you've got everything taken apart? then you know they're all new and won't have to be replaced soon.

well. there's more than just that, the gauges are only half working, , the gear selector lights pnd21 don't work, no horn, heater goes off, low, low, low.dash lights don't light.rear defrost doesn't work.lighter doesn,t work. dome light. etc. now you see why i need it to be safe to play.mike
good thing all these switches can be taken apart and cleaned to work.

Those are all seperate circuits so I would look at the common place they all go, the fuse block. Perhaps some of the bulbs are bad a simple 9 volt battery will tell you that. But some of the other things you discribe sound like a possible ground problem (fiberglass cars don't have may good grounding points) or some of your fuse block is toast.

Regards
Mark

on almost every bulb there was a lump of corrosion on the contact, i cleaned them up and the sockets too. only two bulbs were bad.all the bulbs are working fine now, cool the dash in a 75 vette are like an aqua blue.
the headlight switch needs to be changed, i fixed the wiper switch, the tach is stuck on 1000 so i think the circuit board is gone ,, this will have to be adressed before re assembly, cause it's a beaach to get at.the stupid roller heater control is missing a tiny wheel on the end of the spring... uh oh. mike
