Safe oil level?
Did a search but couldn't find anything specific.
I'm trying to find out where to mark my dipstick for the 'FULL' mark. Basically, just how close to the counter weights is a safe oil level.
Not that it matters but...
This is a 406, the sump is 8" deep. The integrated windage tray is 3 1/2" from the pan rail(bottom of the block) and the crank sits about 2 3/4" below the bottom of the block or about 3/4" from the windage tray.
Here is the way I would go about it, using simple common sense and some old school math ..
Is the pan 4 quarts or 6 ................ ready for the formula ?
Pour in the proper amount ........ the pans capacity. Go play a video game or watch some TV, and allow all the oil to settle / drain into the pan, heck wait a day to make sure all your oil molecules are present .
After waiting the proper amount of drain time, insert the dip stick . Remove and observe the oil level. Go too the work bench , note the location of the oil now mark the stick, exactly where you see the oil and the clean area meet... will need something other then a sharpie for the marking process ..
How close to the bottom of the sump is the pick-up?
If it's the usual 1/4" or so, if it were me- and I was using a deep sump pan to reduce windage of the oil and not to protect against oil starvation due to loss or leakage- I would run 5 qts. in the pan (filter full) and call it good. Mark the stick at that level.
If you want to run all the oil that you can possibly fit, keep the oil level w/engine off for =/> 1/2 hour just below the windage tray. I wouldn't go over the tray unless this was needed in order to fit at least 4 qts.
I would add that IMO there's no advantage in running a deep sump pan full of oil. It extends oil change intervals, and takes longer to warm up to operating temp. Otherwise it would be the same as running a stock pan.

OK Thanks guys. I was wondering what would be a safe level to fill to. More careful measuring showed the windage tray is only 1/2"(without gasket) below the lowest counter weight so I'll mark the 'full' just a tad below the tray. That way, when I fill the sump, I can tell exactly how much it holds.
