sagniaw tranny gearing..is it good or bad

i have a 4 speed saginaw out of a 76 nova, which is 3.11 2.20 1.47 1.00 for the gearing. the rearend i have has 2.79 gears in it, the car is a model a with a big block. wiill this setup make me rev high on the highways with lower speed or rev low? is the 1st gear good for off the line, not interested in racing, just response.

You should be good on the highway with a 1:1 final trans gear and the 2.79. Your first gear will wind up really quickly. Those gears weren't meant for V8s, but they'll work if that's all you have.

I have the same trans in a '72 Nova w/350, 3.08's, & 25.5" tires, and I like it a lot. If your current trans is a typical 3- or 4-speed stick, high gear will be the same in both (1:1), so highway revs will be the same. The 3.11 low gear definitely helps from a dead stop, compared to the more common 2.5 low.
