I have a portable sandblaster and am very confused of what media to use in it. I want to be safe and will be blasting outside. I have heard that sand is bad but is it just when it is in the air, what about sweeping up afterwards?
Does anyone have any affordable suggestions? I have a blasting hood and am unsure of what other protective equipment I need. I am sandblasting a car hauler that has multiple rust spots and bad paint.

Sand is silica...using that creates a dust and can give someone exposed silicosis which is bad news..It is not just the guy doing the blasting but also anyone in the neighborhood that may be exposed..I would suggest that you use a grinder with a flap wheel to get all the easy areas and then blast the corners and other places that are hard to get to..Use something like starblast that does not contain silica if you can get it..That is a brand name and you may need to do some calling to find someone in your area that has it..Also wear a dust mask under your hood..

Good Luck

Not only silicosis, but silica sand and paint are notr real compatible. You need something like walnut shels, aluminum oxide, or I believe it is called Black Beauty for blasting. Here's a site that explains what the different medias are.

There are a lot of ways to go here and Kevin has brought up Black Beauty and it is a good product but Duponts starblast works faster and is as clean(just blast and epoxy prime)
