Hi guys long time lurker first time posting. Anyway I'm a novice painter and most of my own work and do ok. Recently I painted a black stripe on the hood of my camaro when I was color sanding it i accidently went through the clear in a 4-5 inch area. The area still has a gloss appearance to it but in the light u can see (not feel) the slight change in where the clear is disrupted. Question what is the best way to go about fixing this can I just reclear it? Or can I blend the black back into that area and reshoot the clear? I'm a little nervous about the second one because Ive never done it and its obviously in a noticeable area. My other idea was to just resand the whole stripe area rebase it and reclear it but getting the tape area around the pin stripes could probably never be replicated perfectly. Please advise
Thanks Dan
Remask the stripe and blend the affected area with bc. Be careful not to spray too wet as the edges will lift. Take your time and let it flash thoroughly between coats. Then reclear the stripe.
For a novice painter I would suggest you sand the entire stripe, shoot a fresh coat of base and then re-clear. Blending can be a bit tricky, especially your first time. As its just a stripe its not that much work to do the entire section over.
Thanks for the replies guys, I ended up resanding the stripe as I had to get it scuffed back up from polishing it. Even though i only went light on it with 1500 I still managed to break through the clear in another small spot. So I had some primer laying around made sure the stripes were smooth and just reprimered the area I know that I may have a small ridge where the stripe meets the old paint now when I'm all done however hopefully now I shouldnt have a problem with the edge lifting.
I should also correct one thing in my first post. I didnt paint this stripe on my car like i said ive painted cars before and various other things with success however I've just been busy for the holidays so I had someone do this stripe for me and evidently he only put a small amount of clear on because i broke through it with a light sanding of 2000 so now I'd just like to do it myself instead of waiting for him to get time and reshoot it also after this im not too sure id be confident in his work. Anyway the only other thing I was gonna ask is that since its primered now I have a full qt of nason black with the clear and such. The hood and scoop were initially done in chromabase and the same nason clear anyone see any issues with using the nason.
When I posted the edges lifting I was referring to the areas where you broke through the clear. Those are critical areas when doing a repair.
If I were doing this job I would scuff the whole hood with 2000 wet sand, remask the stripe and reshoot it, then reclear the whole hood. That way you avoid a tape edge at the stripe.
Thanks thats exactly what im doing right now except i took the prep work one more ste and primered the stripe area again this way i filled in any little imperfections in the old paint and hopefully prevented anylifting around the area that broke through.
I would re-base the entire stripe and clear the whole thing over again. If you try and blend base on top of existing clear there will be a difference in light reflection that will show IMHO.
I cant seem to catch a break with this stripe lol. I rebased it yesterday which came out good and the first 2 coats of clear I layed on also came out good. I was giving each about a 15 minute flash time between coats and made sure i only lifted a finger print instead of the clear strings when I tested for the next coat. On the last coat it layed on beautiful looked like a mirror then about 20 minutes later i started noticing bubbling forming in various parts of the hood not like fish eye or een really solvent pop because these were raised above th rest of the paint and when I sanded them this morning I got this....
I tried wetsanding with 800 and got rid of some of them but cant get rid of these and Im afraid of going through the clear again please advise! Thanks Dan
