Hello, I'm new to this posting thing but a long time reader. This is the best place I've been to for info. so maybe someone can help. Iam building my third hot rod and plan on painting this one myself.My question is what sandpaper grit would you use to knock off the old paint it's red enamel, I started out with 220 grit and was looking for sand marks I see a few marks and I think they will cover with primer. All my friends say 220 is to fine to knock off the paint . Also none of them have painted their cars either. Just wanted so more info. Thanks

Fred, since your primering over it, 220 will be fine.
I use 180 if primer is to be applied and some use up to 320 anywhere in that range will work great.

I should add, if your sanding for sealer or paint to be applied
its always 320 or higher and 320 may be on the rough side depending on paint your using.

Thanks BarryK . Yes I will be painting the car with Acrylic Enamel Paint. This will be my first paint job I have most of the tools I need to work with the only thing that I may need to get will be the right spray gun.
