Not sure if this is the answer but most paint guns you can pull the trigger about halfway and just air will come out. Usually used to set air pressure. Might be what your feeling? I know on my SATA 3000 HVLP when you pull the trigger halfway it pushes your hand back a little.

Have you left the aircap soak in reducer or thinner for a few hours or more? Does it have lots of removal and reinstallation over time? I'm thinking the seal on the air cap might've gotten a little out of shape and the air pressure popped the seal back in place. It has a plastic seal that is like a u cup if I remember right, they go bad and are subject to deformation if soaked in solvents and then installed.
