Timo;
I must apologize. I said 'a good solid cam'. I should have picked my words better. I meant 'solid' as in 'a proven design'. I didn't mean that it uses solid lifters. I'm sorry. I do not have an old catalog to help you; perhaps you should repost that specific question in its own thread. |

56 chevy shortbox; someone put a 305 sb chev in it with a th400....yeah a 400.
Motor smokes like a coal stove and piddles oil everywhere (well at least the suspension is lubricated) Has cracked windshield, needs seat recovered and several dents banged out. We'll see |

No.
![]() I went to look it over with cash in hand. The owner insisted that the truck was worth.....FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. I politely asked if he perhaps meant another truck and this was the parts truck. This upset him greatly and he explained to me that he had seen trucks like this on those auction tv shows that are all the rage here in the states go for 25,000 or more I quietly explained that Yes this is true, however I'd never seen one on Barrett Jackson go for 5 grand when they're full of dents, with a motor that should be rated in quarts of oil per gallon instead of miles per gallon; and a mismatched transmission. I would have gladly paid him 3,000 and had the cash to do so. He said I was taking advantage of him So I left my name and number.

That`s a shame these days that everybody think that junk has turned to gold and is worth it`s own weight.
We just yesterday browsed a local classified ads and saw a 1st gen camaro, still in usa, for sale to here by a guy that buys cars from usa and sells them to finland, painted a year ago, rust was coming out of bondo repairs, stupid 22" wheels, some 305 engine, pg, 10bolt, drum brakes etc. and price 20000€ which is 25k in us$.

One other consideration is the weight and size of the vehicle, and how you expect to drive. My '75 truck had the GMPP 350/290 HP crate motor, which came with a modern version of the L-82 GM cam. This low compression motor with a relatively aggressive cam (222/222 @.050) is not a very optimal setup in a heavy truck. I had the 4.10 gears to get RPM up fairly quickly, but it was still lethargic off the line and didn't really wake up until about 3500 RPM.
Last year I switched to a Summit 1101 (194/204 @ .050) cam because I was looking for something closer to the specs of the old GM L-79 cam. I figured that if GM was able to use it in so many engines, maybe it would work well for me. Well, after the switch I'm much happier with low end power, and the truck runs very well in normal driving. I've got about 12 degrees of static timing and another 20 degrees of mechanical that is all in by about 2000 rpm, which helps this low compression motor along at low speeds. I also rebuilt an 80's vintage Quadrajet and tuned it for the engine, which is working much better than the Edelbrock 1406 I was using before. I probably lost as much as 30 horsepower on the top end, but in normal driving it feels much stronger and smoother. Bruce |

In my heavy 85 c10 to get the power acceptable I tried many things. A performer cam, vortec heads, headers, 3.73 gear, 3000 stall, and did one thing at a time. A cam was not the best but it could sacrifice no low end. Each step made it a little faster. In july it got supercharged. That was the secret to making it move like i wanted. 6 psi boost made it get up and go. Nice ,quiet, fits under the hood. A tire frier for sure. Mileage stayed the same and all driving manners were retained. It is the ticket for street acceleration and cheaper than a stroker rebuild. Did I mention it is a 305. Yeah and it flies. Like a grand prix gtp, only it is a full size heavy chevy truck.
