Is it an HEI? Does it have a vacuum canister?

Quote-vacum advance none hei-Quote

For points, start out at .019 and then hook up the old dwell meter and go for 28 degrees. 5000 is a bit high to turn any engine without a load. I'd look for 32-34 degrees at around 2800 to 3400 depending on cam, carburetion etc. Unless someone was smart enough to keep a logbook with baseline figures, you're gonna spend some time experimenting. :xmas:

spark plug gap = .035" 350ci=R44 307ci=R45S
point gap = .019"
dwell = 28-32*
base timing (factory) = 4BTDC with Auto trans

These are the specs out of a 1969 Camaro manual.
I would experiment with the base timing as stated, you can probably do better than 4BTDC.
