I always offset the seal jont by about a 1/4". Also, use some anaerobic sealer on the parting line. I think the GM stuff is Permatex 518???

I've never offset the rear main seals on a SBC or BBC, and haven't had any leaks. Maybe I'm just lucky.

sbc 2 piece rear main seal

On the Fel-Pro 2 piece rear main seal the offset is 3/8". Apply engine oil on the lip of the seals. The lip faces the front of the motor. Apply a thin layer of rtv on the mating surface.

I never offset seal theh rear seal and since GM has done millions and millions with no problems and I guess they have it figured out.

Had a engine come in once with an offset rear seal and when the cap was put on it pealed the back of the seal and stacked it up between the block and the cap causing a leak, Put the new seal no offset leaked stopped.

I've done them both ways. Using the offset was out of curiosity, never had a problem w/no offset but I had an engine that I knew was going to be run for a short time then removed so I figgered that would be as good a time as any to see. It didn't leak- but neither did no offset, so don't fix it if it ain't broke, I say.

BTW I have also never put anything on the rubber ends of the seals. Mated them together dry- no probs. The rear main cap DOES get a smear of RTV like shown in the factory manual.

GM has made millions of engines with no off set on the seal that did leak. They didn't go to one piece seals for nothing.

You must have gone to church before you installed the seal.

I must have as well and I have seen plenty of old cup engines in my shop with the seals not offset and they are the best of the best and they are having no problems LOL. And they must go to church as well.
