I'm not 100% I'm understanding you, but it sounds as though the roll pin that holds the gear on the bottom of the distributor shaft may be sheared. This will allow the gear to get out of phase, but could be on there tight enough to run the engine most of the time.

I'd check it by pulling the distributor and seeing if the gear will turn on the shaft with the mechanical advance at the top held stationary. It may take a rag wrapped around the gear to protect it and a pair of channel locks, etc. to turn it.

Remove the rotor and hold the "ears" the rotor is screwed to. That way the rotor doesn't get cracked or broken in the process.

If you can get to the distributor good enough you really don't have to remove it, just twist it w/the distributor in the engine. If there's not good enough access you'll need to take it out.
