SBC Block Main Cap Questions

i'm not sure about the L027# or the V0303TDR and the V0913TYZ #s

one 3970010 block has crank and main caps, one3970010 block has main caps, other blocks are bare 4 bolt main blocks with main caps missing, i'm going to keep the 3970010 with crank & main caps, and keep 3970010 with main caps.

I have acquired 6 SBC Blocks, the 4bolt main blocks are bare, so I'm 100%
they are 4 bolt main Blocks, I had no luck decoding those letters & #s at the
beginning like the V0913TYZ , butt the under lined # we took right off the blocks, (well we took all the #s right off blocks) one 3970010 has the main caps and the one, 3970014 has a crank caps, but other 350s have no crank & no main caps,

is the 305s worth anything ? it's missing intake & heads, other 305 is bare missing main caps.

whats a 350 4 bolt main block worth with out main caps ?

WHATS A LA CAMARO ???

1 - L027 (yrs 1988-1994) -14093627 305cid complete - intake & heads

1- L1307 355909 witch = 305cid

1 - V0303TDR (yrs 1970-1973) 3970014 350cid 4bolt main (LA Built Camaro)

3 - V0913TYZ (yrs 1969-1979) 3970010 350cid (car truck vette) 4 bolt main

Also you should check under the timing chain covers on those 3970010's... if you see the numbers 010/020, those are good blocks.

typically you only need to have a block line bored if you have changed it over to splayed caps, or if you're installing a crank with larger than stock journal diameters. Now that's if you have the caps that belong to the block.

I'm reading your post again and it sounds like you have a block with no caps, and you're trying to use caps from another source? Yes, in that case you should have it line bored. Caps from different blocks may be slightly off, which would result in a non-true-circle of the mains... bad.

oh, and it shouldn't cost more than about $60-75 at most. machine work is a little more expensive here on the west coast, so hopefully others will chime in.

Thats Correct, i have 4 good SBC 350 4 bolt main blocks, and 3 have No main Caps (my bro is using the one block with crank & main caps) so just buy a set of main caps like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT and have it line bored ?

I was thinking line boring was big money, or could i get by line honing ? or same money ?

Help Guys, what are my options ? wheres a guy get main caps ? (i did find those on ebay) there good blocks, and I hate to waste em, I can have 2 blocks. they were in a shop on a 281 acre place my brother bought, (mostly good ole Nebraska irrigated farm Land) the guys grand mother had money, and From what I Hear she liked her grandson, and gave him everything, including money, and he built 4X4 P/Us you know Lift kits, big tires, paint ect. (theres even a nice paint booth in one building, and a Big air compressor) and then the grandson got into meth and endend up hanging him self, so there are four free 4bolt main SBC blocks (well my brother paid 4 the land and cleaned up a bunch of Junk left overs off the 4x4s)

Another consideration when choosing a block is core shift. Core shift can be seen by looking at the timing cover end of the block and inspecting the camshaft bore. If the bore is off center from the bore boss it has had core shift and should be discarded.

Disgarded? Why? At what tolerences? And why waste a perfectly good experimental. If you know it is junk, why not bore it till her walls are tickling the water jackets, or kick up some ubsurd compression ratio; have a little fun and see how far you can push her before she blows; let her put on one last great show and go out with a spetacular bang. Use your imagination, it's so boaring to just thow something away, or condem it, and your ideals before you even try. Beside she may just give you one last wild ride.
