SBC Cam interchange

I have a whipped cam in the 305 in my 86 pickup. (Never seen that before...

I have a cam and lobe matched lifter set from a 90-91 305 with 20,000 miles on it.

Both the whipped cam, and the "new" cam are hydraulic flat tappet models.

I want to use this cam I have in stock to replace the junk one. No $$$ for a new one, no $$$ for a 350 swap right now, and I NEED this truck back on the road ASAP.

Before I go tearing into the engine, does anyone know if this cam will physically fit and work in the 86 engine? Up to what year cams are interchangeable?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

doesn't matter if it fits or not, the bearings in your motor may well be trashed from all that garbage that ran through. Check them-

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm a tech at a dealer, but we just don't see this type of thing. It just gets what the GM parts book says is supposed to go in there by exact specs. There simply are no "mix-and-match" jobs done there.

I yanked out the old one. #1 Ex, and #2 Intake lobes have now been turned into journals...LOL. I bet there's only .010" lift at the lobe max.

I scoped out the cam bearings, and they're not too bad. A bit worn, but I'm not going to change them.

This is really just a temporary thing. I plan on a 350 swap later on, so I didn't want to put any money into this tired old 305.

I matched up the old cam to the "new" one on the bench, and they are just about perfectly matched. The new one appears to be about .030 longer, the lobes aren't perfectly matched to each other when I line up the front faces of the cam. Don't matter, it's going in anyways.

Thanks again for your help.

Just an update...

It worked out fine. I dropped a new timing chain set on it while
it was apart, the cam fits fine, and the truck runs great.
