SBC distributor question

Ok, I have an 88 Trans Am....305 TPI....i broke the little magnetic pick up thing under the rotor when i tried to take the rotor off because it was rusted on the distributor shaft. Anyways, my question is can i get a HEI distributor from a junkyard out of another sbc like a 350 and have it work, or does it have to be out of another 305, and will I be able to use the HEI distributor with the connections that are for the stock non-hei distributor or will i also have to pull the wiring for the HEI? any commments or suggestions will once again be greatly appreciated. THANKS

I am assuming that this car had the HEI with the external coil? It really don't matter if a replacement comes from a 305 or a 350 as long as it has the same wiring to match your existing unit.

305 / 350

No problem, just find one you like. I prefer the unit with out the external coil. Cleaner. You might want to take some of the money you save by getting it from the yard and have a dyno run on it. It will replace weak springs and adjust to you cam. About $75 and worth it.
