sbc harmonic balancer

hey everbody a few months back when i was putting my engine together on my sbc 350 i was installing the harmonic balancer and i heard that you could just take a block of wood and pound it on it didnt seem rite and i found a install tool at napa and installed it with that but i heard pounding on it can knock the bearing out of place i didnt beat on it very much but gave it a few good hits but im just wondering if i messed anything up cause ive got alot of money wraped up in this thing and i am geting ready to install a set of aluminum heads and I DONT WANT IT TO THROW A BEARING THANKS

Back in the old days before the fancy installation tool was commonly available everyone knocked them on with a block of wood and a hammer. You didn't hurt a thing inside the engine.

I doubt you hurt anything. On a 327 there is no threads to use the installation tool, so one had to use a BFH and the wood. The important thing to remember is not to strike the outer ring of the balancer.

I don't recommend the BFH method if a installation to is available.. I used to do it that way, but the tool is much easier and safer.

I think you will be fine. I would just turn the crank a few turns to make sure it still spins freely..
