Is it possible to repair a cast iron head where 2 of the mounting bolt "tabs" are broken off. ( located on exposed area of head where the head bolts go thru)
Yes, there are shops that can weld cast iron to do repairs, but there are a couple of things that would concern me.
1. Will the cost of repair exceed the value of the head on the open market?
2. Is the head cracked? (magnaflux to find)
I had the same repair done on a head about 30 years ago. There is a process to weld cast iron, but it's pretty much a lost art, not anyone doing it any longer. If you do find a shop that can do it I'm willing to bet it won't be worth it to repair the head.
HI,i have repaired cast iron manifolds,,by brazing the break or crack. its not easy, but heres what i do. grind a good V to butt weld parts. get a couple of bags of sand, using a rosebud (BIG tip) heat a big area around break, get it good and hot. clamp pieces to be brazed. braze crack or break,, reheat again,,then put manifold on ground while it is STILL VERY HOT. (use welding gloves to pick it up.) pour 1/2 bag of sand on floor(or table)put manifold on sand, cover manifold with remaining sand. DO NOT USE WATER..using water to cool, will make the repair brittle ,,,, it will break,,, .after the manifold is cool,,,,2 to 3 hours, remove from sand, grind part you brazed,, ,drill hole as necessary. be careful,it will NOT be as strong as it was originally. but with care,it will last a long time. im not sure where the breaks are on your head, but the repair steps, should be the same.
