sbc heads

Got a question of opinion.Kinda of on a budget, and I would like to put a set of good flowing heads on my 350.What would be wrong with starting with a set of oem heads and gasket matching the intake ports and using a small cc chamber with bigger valves? Instead of buying some high dollar aftermarket heads.Would i get the same effect from doing this?and yes I will put the other goods with the heads that I plan to rework. All I'm looking for is to get at 400 HP out of this 350.I plan to go with roller cam set-up which my block is set-up for.Just trying to spread the money out eveningly to get this accomplished.Any advice welcomed and appreciated. This motor will be going in a 86 monte SS with 3:73 gears.I would like to get this car to run at least a flat 8 sec in the 1/8 th mile track, and this car will be driven on the street mostly and track accassionly.I had a 72 chevelle with a 454 mildly built that ran this 8 sec in the 1/8 th which is what our track is here, very streetable no issues.I know it was a BB but I think the 350 is capable of it also in this monte.Any advice? Thanks

Nothings wrong with it. You'll need to take it further than just a gasket match thou.. Think full porting. The meat and potatoes are deep in the port. There are many small chamber heads to choose from that will work well once ported and modded.

Thanks,I have several sets to choose from but I was thinking of another thing and that is to keep the ports consistant with each other. Is there a good way to measure the the intake runners so that as i'm porting them out that I end up with the same result on each runner? So that I don't have some runners flowing more than others.I have some 1.94 valve heads already but according to the info I've found on them the runners are small.I wouyld like to go to 2.02's and 1.6's also.

A set like this is good for transferring dimensions & measuring inside ports etc.
