sbc heads question

I am wondering if anyone can tell me what the specs are on a set of heads casting # 378450. i know i have seen many threads on many forums about people saying the casting number must be 376450 and we are confusing the 6 for an 8 but i swear this is not the case. i bought these heads at a swap meet to put on my 283 but being that they were advertised as 305 heads w/ a date of 12/8/77 stamped on them that they would be much better than the stock heads from my 66. i have had 10 people look at them and everyone agrees that it is 378450.

I can't help to think that it SHOULD be a 6 and if it looks beyond a doubt to be an 8 possibly someone at the foundry screwed up. I have never seen a 378450 but have seen 376450. I am not crazy about 305 heads, they are used by some guys to boost compression (with their 58cc chambers) but they don't flow all that well and being thin-wall casting there isn't much room for porting. In 1977 there wasn't any thought given to making heads with performance in mind. There are some (not sure of the number) that flows terrible, they have 'swirl-intake' ports and make a lot of torque down low but run out of wind above 4000 RPM.
What are the numbers on your 1966 heads?

I'd be willing to jump on the 376450 bandwagon. Mortec.com lists a 376450 for a 75-81 262/267/305 engine with six or seven exhaust bolt holes and 60cc chambers. The info Mortec lists coincides with the casting date and engine you say your heads came from. They do not list a 378450 on their site. If you have a digital camera you can take a close up picture of the casting number and put if up for everybody to check out and give their opinions. Yes, some numbers including 3s and 6s can be hard to read.

i cant believe you are looking up these heads too! i was just searching on the net today for 378450's and all ive seen is 376450. i have two heads off a 305, both with 378450! i also planned on putting mine on a 283, but im guessing these are not H.O. head, so they only have a 1.72 intake valve. i don't think ill use them.

It kinda does look like an 8. I found this...http://www.stingray.nu/temp/heads.htm

They show both 376450 and 378450 for 305s.

if tjose don't work out and you are looking small combustion chamber and 184/150 valves, check out the 14022801 80-86 heads.i had them on my 3/4 ton van in a 305 and it ran great til the oil pump stopped working for my wife on the freeway and grenaded.i kepted the heads just for that kind of useage but haven't needed them yet.the junk yards are full of them as far as i know they are just like the h.o. 601 head.they came in both the 1.72/150 and the 184/150.alot of people go a step farther and order a cheap set of 194 valves for 40.00 take them apart send them out to be reamed out to 194 and bring them home and put them back together.cheap power.
