SBC Indentification

I pulled a 350 small block from a 1972 Pontiac Le Mans. I'm concerned with if it actually is a Chevy or a Pontiac block. The casting numbers show up on mortec and are as follows: 3970010 (2 bolt). I got talking to one of the guys at the speed shop and he had mentioned that the tranny bolt pattern would be different and some of the sbc internals would not be interchangeable if it is a Pontiac. I would like to know where I stand with this block so I can go ahead and start ordering parts. Thanks.

J.

It`s a small block chevy, pontiac casting numbers are different. the number you listed is a classic sbc number.

They offered Chevy motors in Pontiacs? The car has been in my family since new and hasn't had a swap.

Canadian Pontiacs used Chevy engines..........Your Lemans was built in Oshawa. It will say GM Canada on the tag on the firewall.

We used to look for the old Pontiacs for our engines.......everyone else were looking for Chevys. I got an few 396s from Pontiacs for next to nothing.

One friend of mine has a 66 427 Pontiac......factory....Another has a 409 65 Pontiac....also factory

My 62 has Chevy engine and frame.

Butts......I think the last real Pontiac V-8 was made in 1981 or thereabouts...and it was the 301. GM started using the "corporate" engine, basically a small block chevy in varying cubic inch displacements ( V-6 & V-8 )in most of the GM line.
