SBC or Northstar in a Fiero?

Ive got an 84 Pontiac Fiero Indy that Im going to stretch and put a lambo body kit on and Im still debating on the engine. The two engines Im considering are a small block Chevrolet or the Cadillac Northstar. What are you guys opinions on these engines for this application? Suggestions?

the 3800 series 2 supercharged engine is also a common swap, better gas milage, lighter motor, and they do go like hell.

iirc a bone stock supercharged 3800 puts the fiero's into the low low 12's

I've heard some reports of a 3800 in a Fiero outrunning V8s. Not sure how true this is. I'm not really concerned with fuel mileage. I'm more interested in the overall performance of it. That quarter mile time sounds good. I have a small truck that is my daily driver this is more of a toy so that's why I don't really care about the fuel mileage.

If by overall performance you mean acceleration, go SBC. Lots and lots of info on the net, been done thousands of times. Google V8Archie. He makes kits including everything needed for the swap.

If by overall performance you also mean handling, the V6 with a turbo or SC is the way to go. SBC ends up being too much weight towards the back IMO. I also believe the V6 requires less modifying and cutting.

You can build a SBC with 400-450hp pretty cheap. Power to weight ratio will be insane.

The northstar is good(based on personal experience). BTW, it's being discontinued either this year or next yr---notice how cadillac doesn't use v-8's anymore? Except in the suv's which are LS'es.

But the small block will be much easier/cheaper/faster to get running. So, i personally, would go small block. Incidentally, recently i've been thinking about doing a lambo conversion---to try to make a profit on.

The other question is how much power can the TH-125 transaxle handle?

The 5.3 from an Impala or similar will fit just like the Northstar.
Northstars have serious head gasket problems. The head bolts break and are VERY expensive and difficult to repair. A head gasket will cost you as much as the 5.3 engine!!!. Been there, done that.

^^^^^ all good advice (er, except for the previous post). I built, and still own, both a SBC 4 speed 86 and a Northstar 5 speed 88 with IMSA body kit, vett rotors, custom dash, etc. both fun. I obviously have much more $ in the 88, but I personally enjoy the SBC 86 the most. nothing like brute american muscle (IMHO. and it's just that).
TH trans isn't up to the task for most drivers. the Getrag 5 speed is nice, but getting harder to find a good one. The 4 speed from a v-6 Fiero (stronger case that the 84 4 banger) is my preference. 4th is an OD in the 4 speed, and I've found them to be very strong.

or you could just buy one of mine, as they sit in the garage mostly, since I discovered street rods.

Supercharged 3800 Series 2, 4T60E, low 10s. No transverse V8 Fiero on earth has ever proven itself quicker.
And if y'all had bothered to do ANY searching on fiero.nl, you would know this.

I've never had a car on the drag strip. Fiero or otherwise. Drag racing is fun to watch, but it just isn't what makes my own cars fun or not fun to own for me. each to his (or her) own I recon.
whyholdback is typical of the realfierotech crowd in his passion for the sc v-6, and that's fine, but they just aren't my cup of tea. if his 6 beats (any) v-8 at the drag strip I say "yippie, great race", but I'll still own the V-8.
Your milage may vary,

Russ

Yea I'm kind of the same. I'm really sold on V8s. I have no intention of running it on track just curious to what some of the V8 Fieros were running. Don't want to end up building more motor than the car will handle. Ive built 350s in the past so pretty confident in those engines.

What kind of shape is that Indy in?
You could probably pay for a lot of your swap by selling it if its in good shape.
