I have a hardened oil pump shaft. It doesn't seem to have a capture feature to hold it on the oil pump. (Stock has a plastic widget.) There is a groove in the oil pump shaft that looks like it could be for an oring. There's no chance it could come off the pump because the collar is larger than the distributor bore in the block. Do I need an oring, or can I just put the pump in?
That little grove is to hold that plastic "widget" on the shaft..........I have also seen steel ones. Not absolutely necessary, but I would recommend it.
I had to pull an engine because of the widget coming off and the oil pump drive shaft falling into the oilpan. Get the steel one piece one. They're not that expensive and worth not having it fail.
interesting, and good info, i wil get one for the 350 in the 81
thanks
