sbc starter issues

i have a 84 s10 with a 350/350 set up out of a 76 c10. the starter doesnt even touch the flexplate. i believe i have the 153 tooth flexplate and i have the inline not staggered bolt starter. ive shimmed the outside of the starter to bring it in but im shimming out like a 1/4" and the bolts keep coming loose. im only getting like 3 starts out of it before it just makes a bunch of noise. my flexplate isnt tore up yet and i want to avoid that if possible. its to my understanding that the stright hole stater ( the one i have ) is for the small flexplate.... is there other size flex plates out there besides 153 and 168?

Well im no expert when it comes to this subject, but the only thought i have is are you sure your starter is pushing that gear out evey time? Some times I've had the starter spining but not engaging the gear; even though it works sometimes..

yeah its coming out every time, its just close enough with no half shims to just nik the flexplate and piss you off.. then when shimed out to where the gears mess properly i have a 1/4" of half shims in and it works the starter loose after only a few starts
