Hi there, my name is Marvin and I have a little problem in identifying a suffix code on my eng. I can't read the casting #'s real good eng. is installed, here is what I can see cast #'s GM50L. Some have said & I kinda agree here that comes up as a 5 ltr. 305 ci motor. ** Here is the kicker the Suffix code reads V0721AKA, what i have found that too be is Assembly plant V ( Flint), 07 mo. date (July), 21 day of month (21), ** BUT the AKA doesn't come up any where at all. Any help would be Great. Until eng is pulled to read the complete casting #'s this is all I have. Thanks again, Marvin aka mjgord51
Found where you asked this same question in another forum in April - but the name was Jay at the time. A moderator of that forum answered your question quite well. Here it is.
-----------------
Jay the 5.0 on the back of the block isn't a reference to the Poe-Leece! It refers to an engine displacement of five liters; which makes it a 305. The AKA doesn't exist any where that I can find, but an engine ID of AKH does. AKH returns to a 1989 305 with an RPO designation of L03. It had all of 170 horsepower in factory trim which meant a TBI fuel induction, and it was installed in either a Firebird or a Monte Carlo in 1989.
That person "Jay" is my father and to this day the original question is still not answered!! The AKA does exist and it is on my SBC eng. the A compared to the litter K is " quite " different looking.I have looked at 4 other eng and the size of the letter casings are the same, so maybe someone has gotten there hands on those letter stamps and is still laughing at there joke they pulled off still to this day. I think its highly unlikely that could have happened. Maybe I need or should have taken this to the people that made the eng. GM just might have the answer to my question, maybe its a special eng or something like that.
Thanks to all in replying but I also have found from the get go the AKA was from a big block eng. mjgord51
And then maybe you should just get the casting number off it!!!
Simple process!!
A mirror angled towards the casting number. Point the flashlight at the mirror and with all that light back there you can't miss it!
Sure would have been nice if your friend could have taken a pic a little more on either side at the back of the block.
Then we'd see the casting number.
You'll need it anyway when you go to gm.
That is not the number. The number should be 8 digits something like this 14101147. Has the engine ever been rebuilt and the cylinders bored and honed? If so then the block could have been restamped. Measure the bore and stroke this will tell you the cid. You might also do some checking and tell us if it is a 1 piece rear main seal. If it is then you know that it is a 86 & up block. Find the casting number and your mystery will be solved.
The mystery is solved. The stamp clearly shows 5.0L which is a 305 as we all know, the only other thing it could be with a 305 block is what a 334? Which is a stroked 305. What else can one do to a 305 to make it into anything else? I'm not sure exactly what year the 5.0L stamp started showing up, but I believe it was 1986 so you can safely bet it's a 1 piece seal block. Not trying to get wise or anything, but I would not bet on the AKA suffix code as being anything "Special" there were no special 305's, except they were especially good at being poor performers.
A properly fitted 2 piece seal will out last a 1 piece by miles, but when it comes to fixing the leak one piece please
