SBC with no timing tag

Back to basics guy, remove #1 spark plug, the valve cover on that bank, and bring #1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke by covering the spark plug hole with your finger and watching the rockers to make sure both valves are closed. Once you get the piston up to TDC, install your new timing tag (or before) from your local parts house. (timing tape on the harmonic balancer is a very good idea for accurate timing) Re install the spark plug and time normally with a light. 8-10 degrees initial timing with the vaccuum advance disconnected is a good place to start. You will want 36-38 degrees total timing @3,000RPM once you get initial timing set. Adjustable vaccuum advances are available for about $15.00 to replace your non adjustable one from the stock HEI dist. 2 screws and you are in business there. Hope this helps.

There are at least 3 different timing tabs and balancers. 2 are on side in different mounting position and 1 behind water pump.
