So I was browsing Craigslist again today and ran across a style of valve covers I have never seen before. These valve covers have tubes protruding from the sides.

I am guessing that those tubes are where the breathers would go. Or are they used for something else entirely?

If they are used for breathers, is there something to be gained by having them on the side of the valve covers (aside from clearance)?

EDIT: This set from the same seller has smaller tubes. The ad says thay are valve spring oilers.

The covers with the big tubes are meant for use with the breather crossover tube, commonly seen on Sprint Car engines. Use on a street engine will require you to fab up a crossover or some other type of connection.

The ones with the valvespring oilers are connected to the engine's oil pressure system, to constantly spray the valvesprings with oil for cooling. Generally only needed for high rpm/long duration racing to keep the valvesprings alive for the entire race. Not needed on the street or strip.

No wonder they are kinda cheap ($25 and $40, respectively). The blue ones look cool and would probably make a good conversation piece.

Thanks Eric!
