SBF 302 Rough idle/pedal=Battery low charge???
So I have my 302 Ford engine and been having some cooling issues. The truck stalled the other night on the Freeway and seemed like it got too hot. But what is too hot? I think it went up to 220-230. I turned it off and the tstat kept climbing then cooled off.
Drove home and was still getting weird readings on the tstat. I finally pulled the stat and tested it. 180 degree which was getting stuck and then finally opening up more after 220. So I replaced that.
Once I replaced the tstat and fired her up, it started really hard (had cranking power but required several attempts. I have an electric FP so and I could tell gas was there. Once it started, idled really rough. Giving it gas caused it to miss and the tach was all over the place. The truck ran really bad on the road, felt like it was going to cut out.
compression test had 125-137 on various cyls.
Oil pressure is lower now at idle 40 lbs. I was in the high 40s before the stall on the freeway incident.
So my first question is about the earlier stall:
The stall on the road happened then I changed the tstat as I was having cooling issues and feel it got too hot. Why would it stall like that? It has never done this before. How hot is too hot? I know it was getting hot because you could smell the oil burning and could see smoke from the dip stick tube.
The other question is about the charge on the battery. Can the battery cause the truck to rough idle and miss? The alt is 100 amp power master, new. I put the bat on the charger yesterday for a few hours and the truck fired up and seemed to idle ok now. I am going to test drive it today but am wondering if the battery charge can cause it to miss and rough idle.
