SBF Rod Bearing

I pulled my 302 apart and am going to do a rering and bearing job on it. The connecting rod cap has round pin in the middle at the bottom of the cap and the bearing has a hole to fit over the pin. This is in additon to the locating tangs on the edge. Will standard replacement bearing have a hole for this pin, or is it something special? (Don't rmember seeing these on other motors I had apart.)

It sounds like there alumimum rods and they need to be bearings that have the dowel holes in them which are special bearings.

Clevite makes the bearings with a "dowel" hole that you are describing, I'm sure other companies do also, if you can't find any a good machine shop should be able to add the hole for you.

Yikes! I hope I don't need special bearing, I already ordered a rebuilt kit from Summit.

Standard bearing for a SBF won't have that hole. You might be able to remove the dowel from the rod and then you wont need the hole, what is this engine in and what is it's intended use? If it is some endurance engine or max effort drag engine I could see the extra effort to dowel the rods, although I don't think that practice is as common as it was way back when, if it's just a street engine I don't see a need for them.

These rods were in the engine that came in the car. I suspect it saw some duty at the dragway at one time. It also has a Crane Fireball II cam and some of the date codes point to a rebuild back in the 80's.

Well I spent about 1/2 an hour on the phone with summit tech. They can get the bearing - next month! and they are over 3x the cost of a standard bearing. I do have another 302 laying around that I might be able to scavenge the rods out of, but then I have to have a shop press the piston pins to swap the rods. The rods seemed to have Ford numbers on them, like D180E-A or something like that, but the logo, even though it was an oval, didn't look like it said Ford. They have the smaller rod bolts too.

This is getting interesting now. I think the rods are Scat, the logo on the rods looks just like the one on thier web page. Have to check into the crank next.

I would call your machine shop and ask about putting the hole in the standard bearings or how much to remove the dowel.
