screw install

What is the best way to install a screw in a carpeted area without unraveling or twisting the carpet around the drill bit or screw?

Leather workers have these neat hole punches that make a small hole for things they do. If you can't find those one can make a similar punch with a short piece of brake line tube. just sharpen the end and hammer it through where you want the screw to go..Not perfect answer but having those holes does help.

Use finish washers with your screws. Push the washer down as tight as you can over the holes you punch and attach your screw. They come in different sizes and in chrome or stainless steel. You can get them at any full service hardware store.
