sealing a sunroof

Hey all,

I have a '76 trans am, and the guys that owned it before me chopped up the roof skin and put in a sunroof. The sunroof is in pretty decent shape, but they never sealed it to the roof skin, they more or less put it in and didnt finish the job. I was wondering if sunroofs just got sealed to the top of the roof with some kind of sealant. Also, is that all that really holds the sunroof to the roof skin. Thanks all

It needs some sort of sealant and there are little clamps that are tightened from the inside. If you take off the inside trim, you should see them.

I would suggest removing the whole unit to seal it properly.....

If you areen't sure what sealant, see a auto glass shop. They will have what you need.

Your style sunroof might not have clamps. Usually these are held in place by the interior piece with screws located around the perimeter, usually the screws are hidden by a piece of trim which must be removed. Take the screws out and the sunroof assembly should lift out. You'll see a foam gasket that is probably deteriorated and now leaking, replace the gasket with some universal weatherstrip material or lay down a nice bead of clear silicone sealer and reinstall the sunroof, wipe off the excess sealer with wax and grease remover. These universal fit older style sunroofs don't have any drains. Good luck, Bob
