I just acquired an early Hemi engine and I am trying to find out its cubic inch, year of make, etc. I was told it was likely a 354 but everything I have found tells me it may be smaller, like a 270. The engine number is VT350-3150, and the number stamped in the heads is 1632153-1. I also acquired a double 4 barrel intake with the numbers 1733477 stamped on top. I have looked in the classic hemis web page and could not find those numbers. Any suggestions?

If I had my book from Leo Linquist handy I could probably look up the casting numbers and have an answer for you. Unfortunately it's packed away and I'm not sure exactly where at the moment.

One way to tell for sure if it's a DeSoto, Dodge or Chrysler is the size of the heads. If it's a Chrysler the heads will be approximately 20 1/2" from front to back measured in the center. If it's a DeSoto the heads will be approximately 19 1/2 " and if it's a Dodge it will measure less than the DeSoto. That will at least allow you to identify which hemi family your engine belongs to.

There are a lot of VT numbers that aren't listed anywhere. Most were (331, 354) Dodge truck engines (Chrysler engines used in Dodge trucks) but I understand some could also be Canadian versions and others were replacement engines.

I looked up the numbers and had some mixed results.

The VT350 block is probably a Dodge truck 331 cu. in. 1954 or 1955.
The cylinder head casting # that I found for the 331 is listed as 1632159, not 1632153.

Your intake manifold is for a Chrysler car 1957-1958 Power Package or "300", so it originally came on a 392 hemi.

You may want to contact Leo Lindquist, who has published a comprehensive Hemi Engine Data book, which is where I got my information from. I have the first publishing, and I know there have been updates and revisions to it since then.

If you have a Dodge engine and Chrysler intake manifold, they are incompatible. Virtually nothing is interchangeable between Chrysler/Dodge/Desoto hemis.

Here are the engine series numbers. this numvber is stamped on the machined lip on the block in front of the valley cover. Can't miss it.

Just to clarify a bit. The "industerial" 331 and 354 engines installed in the Dodge trucks were in fact the Chrysler version of the HEMI. In addition to installation in Dodge trucks many of the Industerial versions of also found their way into stationary applications such as irrigation pumps etc. Parts do interchange between the Chrysler industerial engines and the passenger car engines.

The numbers listed are a good information source as long as the block came from a passenger car. I have come across a number of industerial HEMIs over the years and have yet so see one that has been stamped on the rail in front of the vally pan. Some (but not all) do have a brass tag riveted to the rear of the block on the drivers side giving engine data.

The best way I know of to positively identify an industerial engine short of taking the heads off to measure bore size is through the casting number. This will be a raised number located along the side rail of the vally pan on the passenger side of the engine. You generally have to remove the intake to be able to see it.

I do have a casting number book here and can look it up if you can provide it.

Good point, industrial, big truck and marine engines were a breed apart, Chrysler version. I should have said, Dodge Red Ram, Desoto Firedome and Chrysler Firepower are incompatible. Big truck, Industrial, Firepower, and Marine are all interchangeable Chryslers. He didn't say it was not passenger car engine so I assumed it was.
