Second Time paint Job, need advice

Hiya all, I'm new on these forums but they looked damn good!

Dont hassle me too much I'm from New Zealand so the products and terminologies here are a bit different from the USA.

I am about to embark on my second paint job ever, my first one I used PPG Acrylic Laquer system and it turned out quite well I think.

This time around I am going to try using a 2K product, hopefully a acrylic enamel.

From reading these forums I have come to the conclusion that I need to paint the car in the following order, can you please give me some advice so I know whether I am on the right track.

I am planning to use a Brittish Racing Green metallic pearl, PPG code 403201 on the body of the vehicle with a pepper white roof.

If any of you are wondering the car is a 1974 Austin Mini, not exactly a hot rod I know but maybe the next project will be!

I'm kind of new to this so any advice is really appreciated, especially on what paint system I should use.

I would offer this suggestion. Go with an acrylic urethane rather than an enamel. The urethane is a much better product. Also the consensus among the professionals on this board is to use an epoxy primer rather than an acid etch primer. I've used both with good success but I like the epoxy a bit better. Other than that I think your plan looks good.

i would go with the epoxt too. if you dont and you do want to do the acid etch primer then you will need to do the body filler step first then the acid etch. body filler wont stick to acid etch primer.

Yeah, I'd say epoxy prime, filler, epoxy prime the filler, then continue with your system. You may want to check with your supplier if black primer/filler is the way to go, especially if you're painting white on the roof. I'd go with the urethane as well. Most important IMHO is to use a wash like DX440 or DX330 before you do anything, and just before the Base coat. A couple of tack rags before Base coat wouldn't hurt either. I'm very weary of the DPLF by PPG, it's never worked very well for me. The old DP wasn't bad, but this new stuff is for the recyclers.

I usually mask off the base coats and clear the whole car in one step. That way you don't have any tape lines. Those numbers are supposed to represent coats? If they are, you should probably consult the PPG Product sheets. You may have problems with too many coats especially with the clear. I usually paint base until it covers (Omni may require a ridiculous amount of coats, deltron usually covers in two). From past postings I know there are guys on this board that put about a 1/4" of clear on (just enough to hide the body lines), but I've always found that 2-3 med. coats is enough.

So from your advice I have trimmed the steps down to:

Talk to the PPG reps about your steps. They will probably suggest a sealer (like DAS1980, they have another but I can't remember the name) or primer (like NCP-250) before the base coat. They also have the time to ask you what you're painting, if it's bare metal, what kind of imperfections you're talking about and how you want the finished product to turn out. Ask for the product sheets, they're invaluable when using any new product.

I've heard of dry guide, but have never used it myself so I don't know the steps involved with it's use.
